On Monday 10/2, Matthew York, GMFC’s Chaplain and Firefighter, presented on fire prevention and fire safety to a group of children from a local homeschool co-op. Firefighter York reviewed the protective gear used for firefighting and reviewed how important it is to not be afraid of the firefighters when they are wearing this gear. Firefighter York reviewed the 9-1-1 system and demonstrated how to call for assistance. One of the students pretended to call 9-1-1 and they were all able to see how the call is dispatched to the station.
The students were given a tour of the fire engine and the variety of tools carried on the engine. Firefighter York demonstrated how to use an ax and halligan bar as well as a rescue tool. Firefighter Damico assisted the students with using the hose from the brush truck to spray some water.
During the presentation, the QRS unit was dispatched for a medical call. The students had the ability to watch the firefighters make the emergency response.
Thank you to Firefighter York for providing such great instruction to the students! |
