This week for training, crews learned about patient care and extrication techniques for when a patient is impaled with an object. Crews first practiced using different tools to cut a metal object (re-bar) to see which tool would be most effective and cause the least amount of movement with the object. Crews then practiced patient care and extrication techniques. The scenario was a driver trapped in a car after being impaled by an object. Crews received patient care instruction from EMT's Mary McCabe and Kat Strock. Crews then practiced various techniques using different tools to remove the patient from the vehicle.

On Wednesday evening, crews again gathered for their weekly training. The Glen Moore Fire Company was given access to a residential structure that is scheduled to be demolished. Prior to demolition, the owners allowed the fire company to train in the building. Gaining access to structures like this allows the firefighters to practice skills in real environments that otherwise can be difficult to replicate in training environments.

Crews practiced deploying handlines and making an interior attack. Crews were able to advance hose lines in the structure while flowing water. Firefighters also practiced crucial skills such as sounding the floor and searching for victims.

While some crews operated inside the residence, other members honed their skills on ventilating the roof and ventilating the building. Roof ventilation is critical in firefighter because it provides an avenue for the smoke and other gases to leave the structure.

The Glen Moore Fire Company sends a big "Thank You" to the owner for providing us with access to the structure and allowing this training to happen!

Last Wednesday, crews gathered for their weekly training. The training topic focused on CPR and pit crew CPR and was led by Mary McCabe (FF/EMT) and Kat Strock (EMT). Crews ran through scenarios that involved giving compressions, giving breaths using the bag-valve-mask, and using the AED. As the scenarios progressed, crews were required to move into pit crew CPR and having to use the suction tool. EMT Kat Strock then demonstrated how to use the LUCAS chest compression system. Members rotated through stations to review and practice infant, child, and adult CPR.

On Wednesday, the crews were kept busy with multiple calls during the storm. Crews were dispatched for an automatic fire alarm at the elementary school that was triggered by a power outage. Crews also responded to multiple calls for downed wires. In between these calls, GMFC was dispatched to assist Station 49 (East Brandywine Fire Company) with a house fire. GMFC made the response but were recalled while enroute. The fire police were also kept busy by closing roads due to downed trees and wires.

Later that evening, the members gathered for their weekly training. The focus was on radio communications. Radio communications are vital to any emergency operation. Firefighters need to remain in contact with each other as well as with the command post. Members of the command post need to be able to relay information to the firefighters as well the county fireboard. Crews practiced different scenarios requiring them to communicate with other by radio while performing a task.

On Wednesday evening, crews gathered for their weekly training. This week's focus was on firefighter survival.

Crews used an acquired structure to review and practice emergency egress. Specifically, training focused on the window hang. This technique is used to escape heat and smoke conditions while awaiting a ladder or additional firefighters to assist with the rescue. When using proper techniques, firefighters can move themselves to a cleaner environment outside the building but then move back into the building if needed.

The officers reviewed and demonstrated strategies and techniques. The firefighters then practiced this technique. This training was the first of several that will focus on firefighter survival.
